Energy drinks have tried everything to stand out — exotic flavors, celebrity founders, increasingly alarming caffeine counts. Swiiyo’s answer is different: put popping boba in the can.
Swiiyo is a Taiwanese brand (the name comes from “Sui-yo!”, a Taiwanese exclamation of delight) whose AMP Boba Energy line debuted backstage at New York Fashion Week and is now pushing into US retail. The pitch: “light energy” that looks good, tastes like a boba-shop drink, and skips the heaviness of a Monster or Red Bull.
Hands-on review: we bought and tasted both flavors ourselves. Scores below are from our own cans. (Disclosure: SipVetted has a commercial relationship with Swiiyo — see our affiliate disclosure. The scores are honest anyway; that’s the whole point of this site.)
What it is
AMP Boba Energy Popping Drink ($14/case regular) is an energy drink with actual popping boba pearls suspended inside, powered by taurine and vitamin B3. It comes in orange and blackcurrant, and there’s a $22 exclusive trial case (limit one per flavor) clearly designed to get skeptics over the novelty hump.
The low-sugar line is the more interesting product: 25 calories and 5g of sugar per can, with added inositol for what the brand calls “mood balance” and a jitter-free boost.
The formula, fact-checked
Taurine and B3 are standard, well-studied energy-drink ingredients — nothing controversial. Inositol is where the marketing gets ahead of the science: it does have genuine research behind it for mood regulation, but at clinical doses measured in grams, far beyond what fits in a 25-calorie can. Treat “mood balance” as flavor text.
The sugar math, though, is the real story. A boba shop milk tea routinely runs 400+ calories and 40g+ of sugar. The low-sugar AMP Boba delivers the popping-boba experience at 25 calories and 5g — a ~95% cut. If you’re a boba person trying to break the habit, that’s a legitimately strong argument, the same one that made Olipop a soda-replacement success.
The taste test
The big question first: yes, the pearls actually pop. They arrive in full shape, survive the carbonation, and burst with juice the way boba-shop popping pearls do — the can format doesn’t compromise them. Drinking boba from a can turns out to be more fun than weird; the 330ml size is the right call, keeping the pearl-to-liquid ratio satisfying to the last sip instead of overstaying its welcome.
The “light energy” claim also holds up in the glass: a clean lift with no jitters and no bitter aftertaste — the thing that ruins most energy drinks for casual drinkers simply isn’t there.
Flavor verdict: they split by personality. Black currant is the sweet-and-refreshing one; orange is the tangy one. Pick by preference — we couldn’t separate them on quality and scored both 4.6/5, the highest marks we’ve given a canned drink so far.
Value
At $14 per case regular price, AMP Boba sits in premium functional-beverage territory, well above mainstream energy drinks. The $22 trial case is still the right way in for skeptics. Free shipping kicks in at $39.99, so a two-flavor order ships free.
Verdict: 4.6/5
AMP Boba is the most original thing to happen to the energy aisle in years — and unlike most gimmicks, the execution delivers. Popping pearls that actually pop, a just-right 330ml can, clean energy without the crash, and two flavors that split sweet-versus-tangy so cleanly there’s an answer for everyone. If you try one new canned drink this year, make it this one.
